Those kids made friends with a ghost girl with telekinetic powers, I think a rat girl with the power to turn human is a bit underwhelming!!

Honestly, Brandon, this scene had so much potential to be deep, and resonate with the audience, but instead you chose to make it happy just for the sake of it.

Interesting that your user name is "NotoriousDoctorLogic" and yet you've shown that you're anything but logical. In fact I'd honestly have to say this comment seems somewhat shallow, which could possibly be due to the fact that you're angry, upset, and/or annoyed that this page wasn't what YOU had wanted.

Were you expecting Erma to fear and hate Sydney? Did you expect there to be bloodshed or some kind of obstruction?

If you think about this logically: WHAT reason would Erma and her friends have to despise Sydney?

Erma is a GHOST/HUMAN Hybrid. There are scenes where she LITERALLY takes her head off. Erma has even awaken the dead so they could have a Halloween Party in a Cemetery. And after everything that her friends have been through with her, a Human/Rodent Hybrid doesn't seem to bother them. Granted it did take them by surprise, probably because they didn't expect it, but it didn't bother them. So to that end, Erma and her friends have NO reason to fear and/or hate Sydney.

From the other comments on here, I'd say that most people are satisfied with how this page ended. I would say that it resonates quite nicely with the message of Hope for a Better life for Future Generations, Something that the previous Generation is ALWAYS striving to do.

I do realize in the grand scheme of things that this comic series makes merely a minuscule dent in time, but allow me to show you HOW this ending is not only Deep, but Truly Resonates with the audience.

Sydney's Father only wishes to provide safety and a better quality of life for his people and especially his daughter, of course there are others who do not have the same ideas and philosophy he has, but as their leader he must look for the best course of action for his people to take. He knows from experience that Humans generally fear and hate what they don't understand. However given that his contacts to the outside world are limited, he takes more caution as he only remembers the old fear he dealt with from his past.

Like ANY generation, He and his people just want a better life from themselves and their children. They hope that their children don't have to live with the same prejudices and fears they did, kind of like OUR reality.

Erma and her friends may only be a small group, but some of the greatest movements and causes in the world started out with no more than a handful of people.

Erma and her friends accepting Sydney for who she is, Half Rodent and Everything, shows her father that times are indeed changing and that there is truly Hope for their two species to get along.

NOW, I ask you, What message could POSSIBLY resonate better than the Hope for a Better tomorrow for your children and people???

Hope resonates better, honestly.

We have enough pessimistic outcomes out there being peddled as "realism" that is depressing that THAT is regarded as realistic.

Fine. I'm just saying that hope has to have a reason to exist. Blind hope is guaranteed to lead people into trouble.

There is nothing blind about it. The point is that there are people out there who would be willing to accept them if given the chance. Sidney and Erma are living proof of this.

I would say more cautious optimism.

I mean what were you expecting to have happen as their reactions?

I mean, well I was beaten to it by the guy above me here by 12 hours. But this is almost literally like saying "Our best friend is Cthulhu-chan, but oh no you turned into like 30% a gerbil so now we hate and fear you"

its a small group of children whose friend is literally a horror from beyond the dark veil whose favorite past time is terrifying her teachers and babysitters and possesses god like supernatural powers. It may not reflect the whole, but it shows the rat community a potential for the future, even if it is just a small step.

I don't see from this strip that the rats are going to go all Hotel Transylvania 2 on us (which bugged the crap out of me, because THAT was a huge leap between movies, like we needed this whole other movie between them) and have the rat kids ALL in school and rats living in the neighborhood with humans. I mean Erma and her mom are one thing, but so far all the other supernatural beings have kept to their own haunted houses and other dimensional abodes. The rats are more physical beings with related worries, so it wouldn't make sense for them to see some kids and go (okay everyone above ground we're working at McDonalds now and mixing with human society like its nothing).

even the leader pretty much says something like this in this strip.

what if the creepy puppy got a girl friend...and they had a kid,

and then a Xenomorph possessed by a demon was implanted into the puppet via undead voodoo, and that resulting thing then was infected by an eldritch horror parasite, which then dressed up like a clown.

I do wonder about one thing: All the other rat people have no pupils. So she isn't even like her "own people". She was probably born into a world that didn't accept her because she had freaky eyes AND could transform into a human which was probably even more reason to see her as a freak. Then, she got to live in a world of humans, but only by maintaining an unnatural exhausting form. She probably never really felt at home in any of the two worlds, and the one that was the least mean to her, was a world where they didn't even know how she really looked. Must have been toughh

and the stress must have been getting to her after Erma enrolled (timeline wise this is Erma's first year at the school as a new student) and was open with her powers and everyone (students at least) accepted her and befriended her.

which naturally led to Sydney acting out with the whole rats infestation thing.

If I were to see a friend transform, I too would be shocked. Not by how ugly the transformation is (assuming it was), but by how his or her appearance changed. Kind of like those jokes about why girlfriends don't want boys over in the morning before they had time to get ready.

Let's hope the parents will be as accepting as these kids.

I'd probably be more of the "You grew a tail? Where did the mass come from?" And all the other little questions that come from needing to understand what was just witnessed.
Reply
:iconrhuen1:
Rhuen1 Featured By Owner 3 days ago
Multidimensional exotic mass localized and transmuted into organic matter so no loss of mass results as would through normal metamorphosis needing to burn some of the mass as energy to power the rest of the transformation.

there is also condensing and expansion of mass where the smaller form is denser but meh, no less out there than localizing exotic particles into physical universe particles and then into stem cells that follow gene triggers in the respected areas to take on a specific form.

But Sydney's transformation is so mild, it literally could be a non-transformation, transformation, like compressing and expanding structures...the tail being the biggest one not likely for that, facial features and hands and such, even as far as eye color and skin color and texture could all be done via chromataphores to a certain degree. But If her bone structure, ear canals, and spine all changed than something more "supernatural" may be required.

Ditto there! Only I'm quite a bit more apathetic when faced with dangerous situations and I'd probably also be cracking bad puns, either that or I would've left and gotten lost down there before the rat people actually attacked.
my thought process: "hmm... So we're all surrounded by rat people who'll probably eat us... Nope." Just leaves and nobody notices (I'm quite quiet without trying) then gets lost in the underground town, due to my terrible sense of direction.
